Java Studio Enterprise 7 and NetBeans 4.0 were announced this week.

Introducing Java Studio Enterprise 7

Java Studio Enterprise 7, which actually ships this week, is a development platform that includes integrated server technologies. There are three primary things added into this new release. These are “Code-Aware” collaboration, support for UML, and an application profiler.

The “Code-Aware” collaboration is focused at enabling distributed teams to interact and work together dynamically. Marc Maselli, president of Back Bay Technologies, Inc., a professional services firm stated, “Our project teams, which have been using the early access release, are particularly excited about the team collaboration and round-trip UML modeling capabilities in the Java Studio Enterprise 7 development platform. These teams are seeing significant performance improvements based on the collaboration technologies, which help us ensure higher productivity and synchronization when developers are working in dispersed teams.

Support for UML is also built in. David Harrison-Jones, lead developer, PSBAS, a firm specializing in Sarbanes-Oxley software development, stated, “I am also constantly surprised by the number of enhanced UML features like in-built design patterns and the latest UML diagram features for communication.

The application profiler provides a means for analyzing application performance and identifying potential performance-related issues.

Introducing NetBeans 4.0

NetBeans is an open source, cross-platform Java IDE that is both modular and extensible. The new version includes support for J2SE 5 (previously known as “Tiger”). In fact, NetBeans 4.0 is the first open source IDE to support the new J2SE 4.0 language features.

NetBeans 4.0 should now be available. This release is also the first release to base its project system entirely up on Apache Ant. Additionally, it includes new features such as the new Java technology profiler and refactoring capabilities. There is also additional support for mobile development.

With this release of NetBeans, all key functionality is included when you download the software. You don’t have to spend time installing additional plug-ins in order to get everything you need (although there are plug-ins that are available to extend the functionality even more). Additionally, the NetBeans IDE offers support for Linux, Macintosh, Solaristm, and Windows.

These updates include support for J2SE 5.0 (previously known as “Tiger”), refactoring for simplifying code maintenance, improvements for Web application development including extended support for versions J2EE 1.3 and 1.4, and expanded support for J2ME including CLDC 1.1 support and integration with the J2ME Wireless Toolkit 2.2.
