It won’t be the first time that scientists have used Microsoft software for data analysis, but it may be the first time Microsoft has released a data analysis tool specifically designed for scientists. The tool, code named “Daytona,” was designed to enable scientists to run a variety of algorithms on the Azure platform.

By using the Microsoft Azure cloud computing platform, scientists will be able to process very large amounts of research data. As Dan Reed, VP of Microsoft’s Technology Policy Group, put it, “‘Daytona’ gives scientists more ways to use the cloud without being tied to one computer or needing detailed knowledge of cloud programming – ultimately letting scientists be scientists.”
