Currently, Microsoft Windows is the leader in the operating system industry, and the same can be said for Microsoft Office in the productivity suite arena, and Microsoft SharePoint is an obvious leader in the file sharing platform area. If current trends are any indication, however, Box.net may just take over the space currently occupied by SharePoint.

Box.net currently has 7 million users, while SharePoint has 125 million–but unlike SharePoint, Box.net is gaining 250,000 users each month, and current customers include over 350 companies that appear in the Fortune 500 list. After receiving a new round of funding to the tune of $81 million dollars–bringing the company’s value up to somewhere around $600 million dollars–this isn’t a company that is short on cash.
